The report evaluated 182 American cities by 29 criteria - including high-quality restaurants, food festivals, craft breweries and wineries - and Portland topped the list for its "large number and diversity of restaurants, the large ratio of full-service restaurants to fast-food establishments and the large number of food trucks per capita." Portland, Oregon (aka "Rose City," aka "Bridge City") is a Pacific Northwestern gem known for its counterculture, eccentric hipsters, natural beauty and coffee shops, and in 2022, the city was recognized by personal finance website WalletHub as the number-one spot in the US for gourmands, closely followed by Orlando and Miami. Indeed, it was largely Portland's title of "best foodie city in America," that convinced me to hop on a southbound train from Vancouver, Canada - a city with a diverse culinary scene of its own. I don't have a travel mantra, but if I did it'd be "follow your stomach," and no, I'm not referring to gut instinct here. Even with a donut in my belly I was able to finish my Reggie. ![]() I also really liked that she had a past beyond March and that is had to do with the Wineville Chicken Coop Murders. She makes my hands tremble with how perfect she plays her role. I’ll give Murphy this: his “AHS” Halloween episodes are usually pretty awesome. Which is not something you’ll hear me say often about an “American Horror Story” episode. I felt like, for once, the pacing was spot on. The mood and tone were sexy and dangerous, the guest appearances (both actors and historical characters) were thrilling and for the most part, the acting was really good. Overall, I really enjoyed “Devil’s Night” for exactly what it was supposed to be: a throwback to infamous killers. Luckily that part of the episode was pretty minor. There’s just no excuse for that kind of laziness in a show that is five years old. Lots of bad writing decisions being made right there. She does this literally before even talking to her husband just once about what’s going on. Instead of asking any appropriate people any appropriate questions about her son, she goes straight to the woman who took him and decides (in what couldn’t have been more than a few hours of deliberation) to suck her blood… suck the blood of a stranger…a stranger who ADMITS to kidnapping her son. In light of that, there should be some basic beliefs we shouldn’t have to suspend and basically Alex blew through all of them last night. Instead, I’m thinking to myself, why doesn’t she take her son, missing for two years, to the hospital? Why doesn’t she turn the hotel and its owners in to the police for holding her son? Why in HELL doesn’t she tell her husband? I understand that we are asked to suspend quite a bit of disbelief for shows in general, especially horror shows, and double especially for Murphy’s shows. I expected big things from that plotline this week. At the end of “mommy” last week, Alex finally runs into her missing son at the Hotel. I really, REALLY dislike Sevigny and her stupid ass character, Alex. I can’t figure out how to segue into my dislike of Sevigny or her character so I’ll just jump right in. And I truly believe he will save this season. He plays the time period of his character to perfection, his gusto is frightening, and every time his façade betrays him and we catch a glimpse of the pure evil underneath the well-fitted suit and perfectly manicured mustache, I’m in awe. As far as the main cast is concerned, Peters has the lion’s share of moxie. Plain and simple.īefore I go on my Chloe Sevigny/Gaga rant, I must praise Even Peters once more for being so perfect at everything he does. Which makes for some kickass entertainment. But what the show has done is turn these very realistic phobias into extreme and supernatural ones. In reality, hotels are creepy or gross because they are the sum of the current guests and shoddy cleaning. One of the reasons a hotel was chosen as the “spooky” setting for this season lies in the fact that we have little control over what happened, will happen, or could happen in our hotel-even more frighteningly, our own personal hotel room-when we make the choice to stay there. From what I’ve seen of these killers in various documentaries and such, the actors did a fairly awesome job of portraying them and I wish like hell we could have seen more of them.īut here’s what I really loved about “Devil’s Night”: the idea that a hotel is the sum of all its past guests. I also love the postulation that March was the one to give all these killers tips on how to be a better at their, umm, craft. Regardless of the episode’s camp or exploitation, it’s just a really fun idea. Every Halloween, James March holds a ghostly, murderous dinner party with some of the most notorious serial killers of our time. This is an idea I can definitely get behind. “Devil’s Night” is a who’s who of serial killers. Last night’s episode, “Devil’s Night,” was the second type of episode next to zero plot development but a ton of fun. How Murphy hasn’t learned to balance these things in one episode is beyond me, but I digress. It boasts very little plot development and exists mainly for thrills or tone setting (or an actor’s vanity). The second type is more of a fluff episode. The first type jumps from plot to plot to plot and gives so much information that you either get lost or get bored. There are two types of “American Horror Story” episodes. ![]() ![]() Simply message the moderators and ask us to look into it. And I grew up a Cubs fan, so I was genetically preprogrammed to deal with loss - shapeless, overwhelming loss.If your submission does not appear, do not delete it. I don't have the slightest answer for how to handle these situations when you're playing games with kids, and anyone claiming to is trying to get you to either click on a headline or invite them to share their hard-line old-school Strict Parenting Techniques at a conference. (Don't get me started on the kid down the street and his super-questionable approach to Super Smash Bros.) But watching your children cheat in front of you has the curious effect of making one rethink his entire approach to games, sports and life in general. Most children are maniacally driven to win, of course, and I'm certainly not raising the only two shifty-eyed tricksters in town. I think I got the point across, which was weird, as I had to do so in a game involving werewolves and seers and robbers. Needless to say, this resulted in a lively and colorful series of discussions about fairness and ethics, and why we won't be playing the Werewolf game in the next six years. (For the record, I caught this because my role in the game allowed me to have my eyes open, where I could easily keep an eye on my shady, nefarious offspring.) The other went with the ol' fluttery-eyelid approach. They cheated in different ways: One covered his eyes with his hands, but spread his fingers apart ever so slightly. We are bad enough at losing that last week I caught both kids cheating, independently of each other, attempting to peek in a game that requires some players to keep their eyes closed. We are bad at losing presidential elections (okay, that one's true for everyone). We are bad at losing backyard cornhole games to Dad. We are bad at losing karate competitions. We are bad at watching the Cubs lose on TV. Because with my kids now 14 and 6, I'm pretty sure it has contributed to this curious result: We are really bad at losing. I don't mind losing to someone who is better than me - which is, incidentally, what I thought after pretty much every Little League game.īut I should have established some system for such games, particularly back when I maintained the ability to keep an upper hand at some of them. ![]() There's a game called Blokus that I've lost, regularly and badly, to a person who routinely puts his shirts on backward and ends 85 percent of dinners by falling out of his chair. Sometimes he beats me at things outright, and that's fantastic. ![]() There is little rhyme or reason to these decisions, which depend essentially on how I'm feeling and how snippy my son has been lately about screen time. At other times I'll decide that I must use this friendly game of Ticket to Ride: New York to teach him that life is an ever-stretching mosaic of boundless disappointment, and that he must begin to navigate it immediately by dealing with how I blocked his route from Central Park to Greenwich Village. Sometimes I'll take a dive in Battleship, levy an off-base accusation in Clue or make a deliberately lousy chess move to let the little people stay a competitive step ahead (and keep the game moving). On the whole, we have yet to establish a consistent routine about this winning-and-losing situation, and my inconsistency is clearly making a tricky situation worse. (In my defense, there is zero strategy to Chutes and Ladders - and that dude had no idea what he was doing.) Should you let your children win at board games? Actually, let me rephrase that: Should you let your children win at board games if you can beat them at board games? Because, frankly, I lost a startling number of Chutes and Ladders games to my son when he was 5 years old. ![]() Do you let you children win at games you could easily win yourself? How to use our free Keto Macro Calculator The level at which you enter ketosis depends on many factors like your own physiology and activity levels, but it's easily estimated by using our Keto Macro Calculator below. When you keep your daily carbs low, but above 0, you enter this state. This state can be achieved by eating very low amounts of carbs and higher amounts of fats and proteins in order to push your metabolism into the natural metabolic state of ketosis (where the body produces ketones to be used for fuel). It's designed to make the human body burn fat for fuel rather than carbohydrates. The ketogenic diet (or keto) is a low carb, high fat, and moderate protein based nutrition plan. Someone looking to lose weight and get healthy will need drastically different carb amounts versus someone who is already relatively fit and moderately active and just wants to maintain or even gain weight while staying in ketosis. No one is exactly the same and anyone who says that keto is always 20g or less of net carbs per day is 100% wrong. This depends on your current weight, height, activity level, and goals. How many carbs a day do you eat on a keto diet to reach your goals? A note on Fiberįiber is a non-digestible carbohydrate that comes from plants and is excreted by your body without being broken down. It's especially helpful in lowering insulin and glucose which makes weight loss easier for some. The point of eating low carbs is to get the body used to using fats for energy rather than glucose - this process is called ketosis and in the end, is what allows you to burn fat instead of using carbs for fuel. Most plant-based foods contain carbohydrates, but some like leafy greens are also high in fiber. your body stores them in the liver and muscles (your muscles essentially store glucose which you can use to fuel your brain). When you eat carbohydrates - bread, potatoes, pasta etc. CarbohydratesĬarbohydrates are your body's preferred form of energy because it is less dense than fat (it takes more space to store) and because it is easily accessible in the human body. Meat and dairy are the obvious choices on an omnivore diet but since we're plant-based, most of our protein comes from soy products like tofu, nuts and seeds, as well as protein powders and leafy greens. Protein sources include animal and plant sources. It is your protein intake that helps you to build muscle and retain muscle mass, slow down the digestion of other nutrients (which prevents blood sugar spikes), and allows your body to utilize glucose as fuel. Protein provides the body with some of the essential amino acids that it can't make on its own, directly or indirectly. Some of the most common types of fat on a keto diet are dairy, meat, and seafood, chocolate, olives, oils, etc. You can get fat from various animal and plant sources. Fatįats are the densest form of energy, meaning that it takes more space to store fat than either protein or carbohydrates. This is extremely useful when trying to lose, gain, or maintain weight.
